The Case For Single Payer, Universal Health Care For The United States

Outline of Talk Given To The Association of State Green Parties, Moodus, Connecticut on June 4, 1999

By John R. Battista, M.D. and Justine McCabe, Ph.D.

Why doesn’t the United States have universal health care as a right of citizenship? The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee access to health care as a right of citizenship. 28 industrialized nations have single payer universal health care systems, while 1 (Germany) has a multipayer universal health care system like President Clinton proposed for the United States.

About Wendy Crow

Job History:
Wendy Crow for State RepresentativeFirst and foremost, I am the mother of four and wife. I worked as a legal assistant in Pine Bluff, Arkansas before moving to Jasper, Arkansas. I am and have been a human rights activist for many, many years. Currently, I do some web design and am focused on human rights activism.

Important Issues:
ArkansasThe Green Party is more than just thinking green. I deeply believe in the Ten Key Values of the Green Party:

Grassroots Democracy

The powerless suffer the most from resource depletion and toxic pollution. Greens believe in direct participation by all people in the environmental, political, and economic decisions that affect their lives.

Ecological Wisdom

The Greens recognize that the Earth sustains all life processes. Green ecology moves beyond environmentalism by understanding the common roots of the abuse of nature and the abuse of people. Whatever we do to the web of life, we do to ourselves.

Social Justice and Equal Opportunity

Greens want to replace the worldwide system of poverty and injustice with a world free of all oppression.

Nonviolence

Greens reject violence as a way of settling disputes. It is shortsighted, morally wrong, and ultimately self-defeating. We are working to create a world where war is obsolete.

Decentralization

Power and responsibility must be restored to local communities within an overall framework of ecologically sound and socially just values and lifestyles.

Community-based Economics

Greens seek a new economics based upon the natural limits of the Earth, which meets the basic needs of everyone on the planet, under democratic, localized community control.

Feminism

The Green movement is profoundly inspired by feminist values. The ethics of cooperation and understanding must replace the values of domination and control over others.

Respect for Diversity

Greens honor the biological diversity of the Earth and the cultural, sexual and spiritual diversity of Earth's people. We aim to reclaim this country's finest ideals; popular democracy, the dignity of the individual, and liberty and justice for all.

Personal and Global Responsibility

Greens demonstrate a commitment to global sustainability and international justice through political solidarity, and in personal lifestyles, based on sufficiency and living lightly.

Future Focus and Sustainability

Like the Iroquois, Greens seek a society where the interests of the seventh generation are considered equal to the interests of the present. We must reclaim the future for our children and ourselves.

Why Vote For Me:
Wendy Crow for Green PartyI am a candidate who is not from one of the two major parties. How am I different? Why should you vote for me?

If you go to the major, two party candidate websites, you'll see that they are all BIG PARTY candidates for CENTRALIZED government. They believe the government knows best; they marginalize working class families like yours and mine to keep us from being involved and having a voice.

The real candidates for the working class, giving families like yours and mine a voice in their government and for policies that bring social and economic justice to every family, rich and poor, rural and urban, are Green Party candidates like myself! It's time to take the power back!

As a Green Party candidate, I want to bring common sense to our agriculture programs. Our programs are geared to huge corporate farms owned by out-of-state absentee landlords. We need to bring balance and support our own local farmers who are struggling to earn a decent return for their hard work.

As a Green Party candidate, I believe in education. We need to support our teachers and our schools. Why does a doctor earn more than a teacher? How did the doctor learn to be a doctor? Our teachers deserve better. We need to teach our children not only their 3 Rs but to be caring, thoughtful, responsible, respectful and concerned citizens!

I want to hear from you. Feel free to send me an email to ask a question!
