| Important Issues: |
 | All of us need to take steps to reduce the pollution and poverty that is threatening Fayette County (Illinois Poverty Summit's warning list for 2008) and the world. We have the ability as a community of individuals, churches and governments to provide the leadership needed to find the solutions. These solutions should not only protect the environment, but provide for economic growth. What is needed is a program that will promote a more local market in agriculture, sustainable farming and a safer supply of healthier foods. We should not forget the need to ensure a nutritional safety net for low-income Americans.
*Policy to refund 100% of real property taxes for five years to any farmer who transitions from conventional to organic farming techniques.
*When county food facilities purchase food it must be organically produced and processed within a 100 mile radius of the courthouse. The object of this policy is to provide a guaranteed local market for those converting to organic.
*Formation and support for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms.
CSAs strengthen local economies by keeping food dollars in the local communities.
*Embrace the idea that no one in Fayette County should go hungry. We must provide ample support for local food pantries and summer lunch programs. |
