About Mike Beilstein

Job History:
Mike Beilstein for US House of RepresentativesWho is Mike Beilstein?

Mike Beilstein is a retired chemist who worked at Oregon State University in nutrition and agricultural research for 30 years. He has two degrees from OSU in Biochemistry (BA, 1973) and Human Nutrition (MA, 1989). He was elected to the Corvallis City Council in 1998 and 2006. He will run simultaneously for Congress and his Council seat in the November election.

Mike Beilstein was born in Normal, Illinois and moved to Salem, Oregon in 1964 where he attended South Salem High School. He went to OSU and after graduating served in the Peace Corps in Lesotho, Southern Africa as a teacher. He lived for a few years on the east coast in Richmond and Baltimore and worked for Medical College of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University. In 1978 he came to Oregon State University, where he worked until 2007.

Mike Beilstein became active in peace and social justice work at the time if the Gulf War in 1992. He was frustrated by the large demonstration of public opposition to the war which had no effect on national leaders. He helped organize OSU Faculty and Staff for Peace which was a focus of peace and social justice activity in Corvallis. For several years he chaired Mid Valley Health Care Advocates, a local group campaigning for universal health care. He is an officer in NAACP and has been Secretary of the Corvallis Branch for more than 10 years. He is on the Missions Committee of First Presbyterian Church of Corvallis, and represents the church on the board of the Pastoral Counseling Center, the Interfaith Health Care Alliance and the “That’s My Farmer” coupon program which promotes local agriculture. He is a board member of the Community Alliance for Diversity and City Council liaison to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission and the Benton County Commission on Children and Families.

He was elected to the Corvallis City Council in 1998 as part of the Jobs with Justice local Living Wage Campaign. When the Council declined to enact the ordinance, he led the successful effort to enact it by initiative. In 2000 he made an unsuccessful bid for Benton County Commissioner as a Pacific Green candidate. One of his major campaign platforms was initiated by the Commissioners soon after the election – civilian oversight of County law enforcement.

Upon retiring, Mike Beilstein was able to devote more time to peace and justice activity. He again ran for the Corvallis City Council. He devotes a month of every summer to travel to Cuba with Pastors for Peace to defy the US trade and travel embargo. He is an active member of Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism and Citizens for Global Solutions. He is a member of the Pacific Green Party Coordinating Committee for the Linn-Benton Chapter.

Mike composes music for string quartet under the pseudonym Sergio Doremino and for ukulele as Aloha Wakiluau.

Important Issues:
OregonIf we had a functioning Democracy in the USA, or if there was a functioning democracy in Iraq, the military occupation of Iraq would end today. Large majorities of US citizens, and large majorities of Iraqis, want the US military out of Iraq. The Iraqis have the excuse that 170,000 soldiers are wreaking havoc in their country making democracy impossible. What is our excuse?

The voters made it clear in November 2006 that they want out of Iraq when they elected a Democrat majority to Congress. Two years later nothing has changed, except that everything is worse. The public has every reason to be disappointed with Peter Defazio, Nancy Pelosi and all the Democrats who talk about peace, but vote to continue paying for war.

I am running for Congress in District 4, challenging Democrat incumbent Peter DeFazio. There is no Republican candidate, so it is a chance to demonstrate the people’s desire for a change of course without the “spoiler effect” of our dysfunctional electoral system.

As a Pacific Green Party "Peace Slate" candidate, I pledge to never vote for the “supplemental” funding bills that finance the war and to never vote for an increase in the base military budget. Other announced Peace Slate candidates are John Olmsted from Portland in District 1, Tristin Mock of The Dalles in District 2, and Alex Polikoff of Corvallis in District 5.

There are other important issues, but the war has such an overriding effect on every aspect of American life that it deserves to be the single issue of the campaign. The colonialist adventure in Iraq is bankrupting the country, ruining our reputation among the nations of the world, demoralizing our soldiers, eroding our civil liberties, making energy sources less secure, and stealing resources from healthcare, education, infrastructure maintenance, environmental restoration and alternative energy/conservation development.

I don’t know if it’s possible to win the election and send a Pacific Green to Congress, but every vote for Mike Beilstein is a vote for an end to the occupation of Iraq. I plan to make the November election a referendum on the war. If you want out of Iraq, vote for Mike Beilstein. If you want continued surges, super-surges, draw-downs, armor-upgrades, stop-losses, collateral-damage and nation-destroying, vote for the guy who voted to pay for it.
