David Smithers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Job History: | |
| 30 year employee of the University of Iowa and member of AFSCME local 12.
| |
| Important Issues: | |
| 1.Economic human rights, including for immigrants and prisoners
a.propose Iowa be a Sanctuary State b.prisoners right to form labor unions (Iowa Prison Industries) c.repeal Iowa's right to work law d.full scope bargaining for public employees e.Minimum wage $11/hr; yearly adjusted for positive inflation. 2.Building Iowa Green Party for 2012 3.Sustainable agriculture (I support Francis Thicke, Dem. for Iowa Secretary of Agriculture) 4.End corporate personhood privileges; Combined tax reporting 5.Democracy from the bottom up, especially in disaster capitalism situations (i.e. post flood Cedar Rapids; slumlord problems like Regency Trailor Court south of Iowa City) 6.End restrictive zoning that discriminates against multiple use and used to keep out poor and families. 7.Push for state single payer health insurance (and much of delivery through UIHC, public and nonprofit healthcare facilities). 8.Preserve and enhance LGBT rights, including Iowa Supreme Court decision on marriage equality. 9.Advance towards free tuition at community colleges and state regents universities for all residents of Iowa. Make sure elementary and secondary education is free (all those registration costs add up). Education must be attractive, not compulsion and age segregation of students. Competant home schooling and public schooling (and combined per choice) must be options. 10.No cutbacks in public employees and public services. raising taxes on those making more than $250,000 per year is a better option. 11.The prison industrial complex is an evil which has more roots in slavery, racism, and excess workers than it does in crime and punishment. 12.Department of Human Services, with regard to pushing elderly and others into nursing homes; parental (including father) rights leaves a lot to be desired. | |
